Continuation of 2019-2020 Humanities Texas Lecture Series

"CONNECTING TEJANOS with their PAST and with their FUTURE"

Our final two lectures were postponed due to COVID-19 and we are happy to announce we are back by and providing these lectures via a Zoom Webinar. JOIN US...

Sat. Sept. 12, 2020 10AM - "Hey, Buckaroo (Vaquero)!" by Dr. Guadalupe Gorordo

Words that define us as Tejanos and describe some of the early experiences lived in Tejas. Tejanos influence and frame Texas life today — its food, its iconic longhorns and mustangs, the names of well-known cities and rivers, and the lexicon born in the cowboy adventure. So deeply ingrained is the Tejano culture and traditions that we often fail to see it in our own lives. Words are much more than strokes that convey a message. Words have a smell and a taste. Words can be played. Their lyrics speak. From the lens of a contemporary Tejana y maestra, this conversation will explore the origins and use of many words that began with the first Tejanos and are now part of our history, traditions, arts, and culture.

Sat. Sept. 26, 2020 10am - "Llorona" Josefa "Chipita" Rodriguez by Deborah Kuetzpal Vasquez

A virtual lecture and painting workshop on Texas' own “Llorona” Josefa “Chipita” Rodriguez. Vasquez will tell the story Chipita Rodriguez as the workshop participants paint a beautiful gnarled tree by the Nueces River with a ghostlike image of a woman superposed on the tree and the river. As they paint a canvas with a traced image, Vasquez will share glimpses of Chipita’s tragic story. She moved with her father Patricio Rodriguez to San Patricio de Hibernia, Texas. After her father’s death, she furnished travelers with meals on the porch of her lean-to shack. Chipita was the first woman hung unjustly with circumstantial evidence in Texas on Friday, November 13, 1863.

This lecture is open to 100 attendees who want to attend the webinar, the painting portion is limited to the first 15 attendees who register using RESERVATION form. Painting supplies will be provided to the first 15 attendees who reserve a spot (18 years and up is preferred) and those who reserve a spot must be willing to drive to Teatro's Cultural Arts Center in Seguin on Fri., Sept. 25 4PM-6PM to pick up supplies.
